The National Institutes of Health, which is comprised of 27 institutes and centers, is an agency of the Department of Health and Human Services in the US. It awards grants in support of basic or clinical biomedical, behavioral, and bioengineering research.

Source

Recent NIH data is provided by the Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tools (RePORT) tool. Raw data is available at http://projectreporter.nih.gov/exporter/ExPORTER_Catalog.aspx. Note that RePORT data has full project number records. Unlike some other federal agencies such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), the NIH issues a separate record for each award transaction.  In addition, if a grant has sub-projects, each will have its own record. The database, maintained by the Office of Extramural Research at the National Institutes of Health, includes projects funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services (SAMHSA), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP), Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ), and Office of Assistant Secretary of Health (OASH). Users, including the public, can use the RePORT interface to search for scientific concepts, emerging trends and techniques, or identify specific projects and/or investigators.

Data that predates RePORT can be found in the CRISP (Computer Retrieval of Information on Scientific Projects), a searchable database of federally funded biomedical research projects conducted at universities, hospitals, and other research institutions. This data is also available for download at http://projectreporter.nih.gov/exporter/ExPORTER_Catalog.aspx.
